Judges’ comments:
This work, this anthology is a gem. Full of unexpected surprises and delightful sallies into wholly foreign realms. A delight, a bucolic frolic, an earnest journey, a vigorous climb up the mountain of our own understanding, and a foggy glimpse into the glade of our own souls where bears in all their myriad forms dance beneath the stars. By turns funny and poignant, wry and crass, it’s a pocketful of honey drizzled goodness. None of the poems in and of themselves is perfect, for all poems are only ever abandoned in despair of their achieving the greatness we first saw in a flash of inspiration…yet the sum of their individual flaws is, in a word, perfection.”
Love, love, love this. So many authors, so many emotions, in fact, if I may, I’ll call this a rainbow of emotions. From the sublime to the thought provoking; from innocent to ‘don’t tell anyone you’re reading this book.’ It’s all there, and I was left wanting more only because of the quality of the writing. In my years as a Rainbow Award judge, I have never given a perfect score, until now.
Poetry is difficult to judge but each piece was beautifully written.
This book did what Poetry was supposed to do, elicit emotion. I laughed, paused, thought, and teared up a few times. Well done.
BRILLIANT! Lush and evocative, it gave me an excellent peep into a rich, diverse culture and made a Bear Admirer out of me! I especially enjoyed the poems by Jack Fritscher and Gavin Geoffrey Dillard.
Poetry written with the flair of genius.

Ever since Girth & Mirth, the USA urban gay and bisexual social clubs founded in the 1970s for large men and their admirers, chub culture has always been part of bear community. But why do we associate bigness with masculinity? Strength, comfort, softness, abundance, identity?
Why have some of us forever admired, celebrated, and fetishized big men, while modern fashion and other social forces have long stigmatized, even demonized, fatness?
We’re looking for memorable stories of big love, romance, and community, especially ones that express diversity in characters, in any genre from 3,500 to 6,500 words long. Settings may be contemporary, historical, or mythical.
To learn the particular type of short fiction we seek, please familiarize yourself with the BBB’s Hot & Hairy Series: search for “Bear Bones Books” on Amazon and use their free Look Inside the Book function to read a few stories. Better yet, buy a book and read it.
Payment per word for original work: 2 cents ($0.02 USD), payable upon publication; one contributor copy. Reprints/excerpts accepted at half the original rate: please include complete prior publication information.

Stealing Arthur, a novel by Joel Perry
The Bear Bones Books imprint of Lethe Press is pleased to announce the forthcoming publication of Stealing Arthur, a novel by Joel Perry.
Stealing Arthur, front cover
Based on an actual event, 55 of Hollywood’s highest awards — the Arthurs — have been stolen, setting in motion the kind of crazy only turn-of-the-millennium L.A. can provide. Intrigue, murder, comedy, sex, romance, celebrity dish, and ultimately redemption play out for characters from Skid Row to Hollywood’s Walk of Fame, including all the desperate wannabes in between. In a town where people would happily kill anyone for a part, what would they do for a gilded Arthur statuette?
“Joel Perry’s new book, Chasing Arthur, is a hilarious page-turner that I just could not put down! His work is one of the best-kept secrets in Hollywood. With this book, I predict that his name will be on everyone’s lips. Read it now!” — actor & comedian Jason Stuart
Joel Perry is the author of Funny That Way; That’s Why They’re in Cages, People!; Going Down: The Instinct Guide to Oral Sex; and The Q Guide to Oscar Parties and Other Award Shows. He grew up hairy, heavy, and homo in North Carolina. He has been an actor, writer, comedian, producer, and spiritual director. After 28 years in Los Angeles, Joel has returned to his hometown of Wilmington, N.C., where he lives with his husband and two cats that are so adorably cute you just want to vomit.

This summer, the Stag God returns in another fantastic tale!
Summer of the Stag God by J.C. Herneson front cover Bear Bones Books
The Bear Bones Books imprint of Lethe Press proudly announces the publication of its 22nd title, Summer of the Stag God, the second in the Stag God Chronicles series by author J.C. Herneson.
The erotic adventures continue in the land of Khernia, home of the Lord of the Seven Tines Ashlan. The enemies of Ashlan — with their forced oaths of celibacy and chastity — are desperate to wipe from the face of the earth the sensuous cult of the Stag God.
In “The Archon,” a young man is sent out into the wilderness, to find the cult, become one of its faithful under false pretenses and report back to the High Church’s Palace of Light.
“The Ancient Grove” sees Ashlan himself imperiled as the Lord Curate’s insidious plan to destroy all orcs and humans who dare worship the powerful Beast Gods is revealed.
Don’t miss this exciting sequel to the compelling Stag God story.

An excerpt from Summer of the Stag God:
* * *
Beneath the pine trees, in a clearing redolent with the scent of pine resin, burnt in chunks from brass braziers hung from the strongest boughs, they came clad in dark clothing, wearing blankets like cloaks and moving cautiously.
The young man was stout, with broad shoulders and ample thighs. He still possessed a touch of baby fat to his face and soft, rounded buttocks, but the ample groin and dusting of light fur on his cheeks and chin told he was on the verge of adulthood. His lips were full and lush, his hair a reddish-copper mess atop his head and his blue eyes hidden by the blindfold.
Hands reached out to touch Mathis, to grope him, to caress him. One hand touched his shoulder, and slid down his back, over the slimming of his hips and the curve of his buttocks.

Ralph Seligman-Courtois was inspired by Hibernation and Other Poems by Bear Bards to contribute the following bear limericks, which he read at the Bear Bards reading during the Saints + Sinners literary festival in New Orleans in May 2014:
Hibernation, front cover
One day the cops stopped a gay bear.
They said it was because he was bare.
The bear said: “Not true!”
“And I’ll prove it to you”
“For I’m totally covered in hair!”
A sleuth is a gathering of bears,Where they settle all their affairs.
They discuss how they feel,
And prepare a grand meal.
And decide to combine various lairs.
A bear can be rough as can be,
Full of brawn and muscle is he.
His fur may be stinky,
But he still lifts his pinky,
while sipping his oolong tea.
Just ‘cause a bear is hirsute,
You shouldn’t think him a brute.
He might be as smitten,
By a sweet furry kitten,
As hearing a concert of flute.

Dennis Rhodes, author of two poetry books and a contributor to Hibernation and Other Poems by Bear Bards, was inspired by the cover photograph (“Justin”) by YogaBear Studio to pen the following verse:
Hibernation, front cover
The exquisite line of hair
between your chest and navel
simply begs for
my finger’s gentle touch.
It is so perfect
so flawless
it demands I think
of all of you that way…
but I dare not touch,
allowing my eyes to enjoy
the sensual pleasures
you give to me in abundance
just being the ordinary
God-given man you are.
— Dennis Rhodes

Egg
by Stephen Mead
Hibernation, front cover
Nog of nogs, the creamy yolks
In a globule
With straws, the pinprick holes
In shells, the insides, an elixir
For mural mediums, the suspensions,
The great oracles of paint…
Such is the ritual of what you do
On my flesh.
Here we drink, breathe fire tinctures,
The ageless grog of the primitive,
Viking-furred, glistening holiday lit.
Now
How warm:
Two toasts we are proposed to each other,
Sipping time, all time love makes, like us
Open & nude.
Now in print!

Bear Bones Books proudly presents Hibernation, and Other Poems by Bear Bards, a smart, sexy, eclectic poetry collection by a veritable Who’s Who in Hirsute Gay and Bi Men’s Literature.
Predominantly in free verse, these wide-ranging poems address all aspects of contemporary (two-legged) bearish life: changing standards of masculinity, male romance and lust, maturing men’s body issues, and what it means to live and love within the worldwide bi and gay male bear community. The poems are sometimes introspective, sometimes erotic, sometimes amusing — but they’re all well-crafted glimpses of the bear experience.
This thoughtful, fun, and moving book features more than 100 poems by 40 esteemed authors, including David Bergman and Albert Skip Brushaber, whose homonymic, eponymous poems give this anthology its title, plus noted writers Alfred C. Corn, Jameson Currier, Gavin Geoffrey Dillard, Jack Fritscher, Daniel M. Jaffe, Raymond Luczak, Ron Mohring, Felice Picano, Jay Starre, Jim Stewart, Dan Stone, and Emanuel Xavier and many fine poems from other fine contributors from around the U.S. and Canada.
Poetry lovers and bear-loving men alike will appreciate the diverse range of contemporary masculine voices in Hibernation, and other poems by bear bards.
